Malaysian Universities Use Blockchain to Curb Fake Certificates.
In most of the counties, fraudulent certificate’s is a problem which they are not able to solve. But right now in Malaysian Universities are planning to use blockchain to stop fake certificates. Also, this initiative is being done by teaming up with the government.
According to the announcement by the Ministry of Education, They are working with six universities, and have launched a platform called “e-Scroll”. This will be used to issue and verify the university certificates.
This problem is not new as in counties like the UK, one British buyer spent almost £500,000 over fake documents as mentioned in a BBC report. And such stories in Malaysia happens to be common.
Thus this idea of using blockchain to stop fake degree certificates will be a great way to curb this entire fake documents operation. The platform has been developed by the International Islamic University (IIUM) in Malaysia.
Currently, the verifications of university certificates are done manually. This makes the entire process inefficient. Because every year Malaysian universities get almost thousands of request to verify graduates. And this entire process is done by telephone or by email.
Ministry of Education explained that the system stores the certificate’s data on NEM blockchain which will allow online verification. This process is done within few seconds as the QR code on the degree is scanned to verify the authenticity of the certificate. NEM blockchain was adopted due to the unique features of traceability and authentication.
e-Scroll stores degree certificates of students who are graduating from Nov. 10 of this year. Ministry of Education is also suggesting other universities to join this association and use blockchain.
